The Academy does have a membership body of 6687 industry professionals as of 2017. All of whom will have a different comment, view and personal opinion on this year’s selection of “Best Picture” nominees. It is impossible to say the names with 100% confident that which 8 nominees will take home the award. Best Picture Academy Awards are slightly different than other categories.
How the Best Picture Award is Determined?
As other Oscar categories are decided by the popular vote while Best Picture Academy Awards is determined by a weighted ballot. Voters have their choices to rank from first to last. If one nominee earns more than 50% of the first-place vote, it instinctively wins. If in case, no nominee can meet that threshold, the film with the first-place vote gets removed, with its ballot setting up for reapportion to the second-place choice. This formal process continues until one nominee reaches to 50% plus one vote. However, the goal, says the academy, to award the top Oscar based on a consensus choice.
Can a film win Best Picture and Best Director Award?
Given the two different voting systems, it’s not so hard to understand how this can happen. However, between 1934 and 1945, this was a fairly common phenomenon when Best Picture was first determined by a preferential ballot. Some notable films like “Mutiny on the Bounty” (1936), “The Great Ziegfeld” (1937), “The Life of Emile Zola” (1938), and “Rebecca” (1941) while all of them won the Best Picture Academy Awards, their directors lost to “The Informer” (John Ford), “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town” (Frank Capra), “The Awful Truth” (Leo McCarey) and “The Grapes of Wrath” (Ford) respectively.
Alejandro González Iñárritu is a Mexican film director, also won Best Director for a film that took the Academy Award “Birdman” 2015. As with “The Revenant” this was also so magnificent directorial achievement and had a strong positive support throughput the creative categories. However, 6 of the last 7 films that won Oscars for directing also took home the lensing prize. When the question arises to Best Director, bigger is better.
Past Winners of Oscars Best Director Award
While Ang Lee (Life of Pi), Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (The Revenant), Damien Chazelle (La La Land) and Cuaron again (Roma) all of them won the Best Director Oscar, their films, however, lost to “Argo” (2013), “12 Years a Slave” (2014), “Spotlight” (2016), “Moonlight” (2017) and “Green Book” (2019) respectively.
